An inborn error of metabolism (IEM) is a rare genetic condition that affects the way the body processes certain nutrients. These conditions are often caused by an inherited gene change that prevents the body from making or properly using a specific enzyme.
Enzymes are proteins that help the body break down and process nutrients from food. When an enzyme is missing or does not function properly, the body may be unable to safely process certain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, or other nutrients.

Unfortunately, many rare metabolic disorders are overlooked or misunderstood by health insurance companies.
